Released in late 2025 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the franchise, Ghost in the Shell is a homebrew project for the Game Boy Color, made by avalentine1996, that serves as an aesthetic homage to the 1995 film and the technical era of the late 90s. Structured primarily as an 8-bit visual novel, the game translates the narrative of the series into a portable format, utilizing detailed pixel-art cutscenes and extensive dialogue. While the core experience focuses on exploration and investigation, the gameplay is diversified through the inclusion of arcade shooting and driving sequences, providing a kinetic counterpoint to the narrative segments. The narrative center of the experience focuses on the classic cyberpunk tenets of identity and systemic corruption within the Section 9 universe.
